I did something wrong…..

*sigh*

Started various seedlings on schedule (using the end of April for the date of last frost, since everything I can find says thats last frost for my area).  Everything SPROUTED, and GREW way quickly this year.  Guess using proper lighting instead of a sunny window helps…..

Had to pot up almost everything a couple weeks ago as the roots were getting rediculous……and now everything, except the baby pumpkin plants, are looking really sad.  They’re still under the grow lights, I don’t have a green house to put them in yet.  I had some watering issues the first week or so, trying to figure out the proper watering needs now that they weren’t in the self watering tray, but they still look really sad…..lost a bunch of the pepper plants too.  I’ve restarted more seeds for those though its possibly late enough now I don’t know how much good that’ll do…..

I, politely, refuse…

….to discuss, in any signifigant way, the events in Boston as they happened on Monday.

For one, bloggers with better writing skills than I have already said everything necessary.

For another, I grew up a bare 20 minutes from Boston.  Up until 7 years ago my mother worked in a building visible in every video of the first explosion and she still rides the T to and from work daily.  I have friends who regularly go “into the city” to watch the marathon on Patriots Day.  And some of THEIR friends (and in one case family) were even running on Monday.  So far as I’ve been able to determine everyone I know, and all of their friends and family, are all ok, or mostly anyway.

And thats all I have to say on the matter.

I take that back, there’s one more thing.  THE GODDAMMED FUCKING MEDIA NEEDS TO SHUT THEIR IDIOT PIEHOLES AND GET THEIR FUCKING STORIES STRAIGHT AND JUST FUCKING STOP!!!!

Ok, now I’m done.

Homemade mustard update

Original post here.

The recipe information says its good for 30 days, and thats about what it lasted.  At about the 30day mark it started loosing flavor really quickly.  Which is fine, the recipe made more than enough for that time period for us.

2nd time making it I made a half recipe, since we didn’t use all of the first batch, and I used just a little less of each liquid (I didn’t measure sorry, maybe a teaspoon or two less) and it took much less time to turn the right consistency.

Home dehydrating part 2

Christmas, just over a year ago, my SIL got us a small dehydrator.  We’ve LOVED having it in the house, and its been in use pretty much constantly.  And I have to say that for what it is I’ve been quite happy with it.  After a year of hard use the motor is still running just fine, though the trays are showing definete warping.  So after this past Christmas I ordered some new trays for it.  And its back in perfect running order again.

But after some additional discussion Husband and I decided we wanted more dehydrator than the little one could provide.  Now we’re still using it, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve also been slowly working on building up my stores of dehydrated meat and organs to feed the dogs for travel and SHTF type situations, and for that, well, the little dehydrator was just to slow.  So we ordered ourselves the Excalibur 3900 9 tray model dehydrator.  I’ve been using it for a couple weeks now and I’m absolutely delighted.  The temperature control is just awesome, and it holds SO MUCH MORE of whatever I’m dehydrating.  So totally worth the money!
