Poor puppies

This morning I hauled Arty off to the vets to be neutered.  Apollo was peeved because Arty got to go for a car ride and he didn’t.  Arty was peeved because he was hungry….

The vet has called to say that Arty made it through surgery fine (it was complicated by the fact that one of his testicles hadn’t dropped, which was the reason he was being neutered in the first place), and he was awake and doing ok.  I assume he was awake but drugged as I didn’t hear any shrieking in the background….they’re keeping him overnight and we’ll pick him up tomorrow.

Apollo got over his sulk at the lack of car ride, but is now VERY UPSET that Arty is missing.  He keeps looking for him, and hasn’t hardly eaten a thing all day….

Course, the cats are thrilled, they know Apollo won’t chase them, but we’ve not yet convinced them that Arty won’t (probly cause he still does on occasion).

Spanish blogger threatened with lawsuit for warning pet owners about recall

Full story here.

So, even though the Diamond recall information sent out only included the USA and Canada, apparently the food was sent out to quite a few other countries as well.  And the USA and Diamond have no interest in publicly announcing what countries either.  They sent the info to the appropriate authorities and its up to them to publicize it in their countries….so a when a blogger in Spain found out about the recall she posted it on her blog in an attempt to spread the word.  She’s now being threatened with a lawsuit for doing so.  Now likely its not actually the parent Diamond company itself doing the suit, but its certainly someone associated with them, if only the local distributor…..this on top of the information that there appears to have been an attempt to cover up the recalled information on some bags sent to Malaysia?  Yah, I don’t think so.

Btw, the human count for those sick with this particular strain of salmonella comes to 22, there are two confirmed canines infected with this strain, where the strain was confirmed by a lab to be the same strain of salmonella.  There’s a huge list of other reported illnesses and deaths in pets, but none have been confirmed by lab, at least yet.

Ok, its rant night

So yah, I wander through a variety of message forums, on a variety of topics.  Some I stick around for alot of time, others I barely touch on.  My last post was inspired by someone on ONE message board.

This one is about a poster on a different message board….some CHILD (I don’t know the actual age of the person), wanting to know if they should neuter their German Shepherd.  Now normally I’m one of these folks who says that not neutering is better for the dog (and I have studies and research to back that up, unlike “common knowledge” which says you’re a HORRIBLE person if you don’t spay/neuter your animal *eye roll*).  However, I want this dog neutered, and maybe found a new home while I’m at it.

See, the dog already got hit by a car once, which is why they are considering neutering (huh??), but

of course he NEVER leaves the property!!!

So….the truck that hit the dog hit him in the driveway?

Well no, but it was RIGHT in FRONT of the driveway!!! He NEVER leaves the property!!!!

Either the dog was in the road (off the property) or the guy went off the road to hit your dog, you don’t get it both ways.

He DID NOT!!!

So you’ve fenced the yard now so he won’t get hit again right?

HE NEVER LEAVES THE PROPERTY!!!!  And NO we’re not CAGING HIM, we ALWAYS leave him out when we’re not home!!!!

If you leave him out when you’re not home how do you know he never leaves the property?

Cause he DOESN’T!!!!

Omg.  Its dog owners like this that give the rest of us a bad name.  Bets on how many half GSD puppies there are in nearby?

What I did with my day

No, I didn’t spend ALL day swearing at the programmer who created the theme I use, honest.

Instead we went over to my BIL’s, where the entire family, with dogs, had gathered.  Guess Apollo and Arty had as much fun as we did:

Looks like they wore themselves out!

Know an animal lover in Memphis TN?

Or even better, know a lawyer in that area who’s familier with FOIA law and animal rights law and willing to work for cheap?  I think they’d take a sports person or music star who was willing to stick their nose in and add some publicity too…..

Last year I posted several posts on the story of Kapone, a pitt-bull who was picked up by an MAS employee, and disappeared.  6 months later he was discovered in a backyard in the next state where he was being used for stud.

Kapone wasn’t the first animal that MAS “lost”, just one of the first to gain serious media attention.  Outside reports and audits indicate that a rather significant percentage of animals just disappear after being picked up by MAS employees, and it appears that at least some of them are being sold for dog-fighting purposes (breeding, baiting, etc).

Well, MAS is at it again, or more correctly, still.

Nola (a lab/bulldog cross) and her buddy Uno (a husky) dug under their fence on May 3rd, and were picked up by animal control and taken to MAS the same day.  Their owner, a Ms Henry, checked with MAS on May 4th.  And was told her dogs were not there.  A week later a neighbor called her and told her that he was pretty sure her dogs had been picked up by animal control the day they got out, so back she went to MAS.  THIS time employees admitted they had Uno, however although she was microchipped and reported lost to the chip company, Ms Henry never received a call.  After speaking with the officer who picked up both dogs they were able to find the records for Nola, dated APRIL 3rd, and listing her as a pittbull cross.  There was no information as to where Nola went or what happened to her.

Ms Henry is in the process of filling out an FOIA request for all security footage and information related to Nola’s intake, however considering Yes Biscuit’s attempts to do the same we’re not very hopeful that the information will be obtained.

Here is a picture of Nola:

If you have seen this dog, or know information on her where-abouts please inform the police, please ALSO consider informing Yes Biscuit so she can make sure that your information is followed up on.

Canine Body Building

CNN Video

There are actually a variety of organizations that have canine weight pulling contests, though this is the first I’ve heard of a multi-event contest like this.  That 1000lb figure isn’t theoretical either.  Apollo was training for IWPA pulling, and managed 600lbs at the age of 9months and doing so like it was nothing, I was ready to pull the plug cause I was worried it was to much weight on his growing frame, but he didn’t even flinch.  And he wasn’t even GOOD at it.  Dogs who’d been training for a while were pulling 1000lbs plus in competitions in almost all of the weight groups.  Sound insane?  Go here and look at the contest results.  Dogs weighing as little as 30lbs pulled over 1000lbs.

I’m not sure if it’ll replace dog fighting in the culture, but I like the concept.  More power too them.

Latest Diamond Pet Foods recall comes from a different plant?

Truth About Pet Food is reporting that the latest recalled foods have come from a different plant than the original recall.

Now I haven’t quite figured out how they can tell that, I’m not sure if I’m blind, or if they have information I don’t, BUT what is clear is that this new recall includes states that were NOT part of the original recall:

The product was distributed in the following states, further distribution through other pet food channels may have occurred:

  • Colorado
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Wisconsin

Note is also made that two of the recalled foods where MADE in Augest of 2011, and not bagged for one or two months later.  And yet the “expire date” goes with the bagged date and not the manufacture date.

Production Code & Best Before Dates:

DSL0801, 26-Aug-2012

DSL0801, 26-Aug-2012

DSL0801, 27-Sept- 2012 (Product manufactured on Aug. 26, 2011 and packaged on Sept. 27, 2011)

DSL0801, 18-Oct- 2012 (Product manufactured on Aug. 26, 2011 and packaged on Oct. 18, 2011)

Makes me wonder if we’re about to get a whole NOTHER list of recalled foods….
