Hospets

Not to horribly long ago I was browsing the GunBlogBlackList and ran across a post by someone (of course I don’t even remember which blog at this point, sorry), who’s a nurse (I think?) and had a patient come in for an extended hospital stay on short notice.  The patient was extremly worried about her dogs, having no family nearby to care for them.  The nurse took the dogs herself until such time as other arrangements could be made, but was curious if anyone was aware of a service for people in situations like this.  I think I was the only one who responded, but even my response was “no.”

That answer has now changed.  A lady in OH, inspired by watching her father go through the same process, has created a service called Hospets.  How it works:

Basically the way it works: Hospice or Senior Services will discuss our program with their pet owning patients. If the patient seems interested they are referred to us. At that point, we go to the patient’s home and meet with them, their family and their pets to determine what their needs will be. Do they need helping getting pet food? Does their pet need to be taken to a vet or to a groomer? Do they need helping with basics (walking a dog, cleaning a litterbox etc) During this meeting we will also determine if they have a plan for the care of their pet in the case of an emergency hospitalization, and what is the plan for the pet when the patient is no longer with us. We will get photos, a full bio on the pet, medical and vet info and emergency contact information.

If the patient opts to use us for emergency care or for placement services, they will sign releases allowing us to get vet records and also to allow us to take possession of the pet when needed. We are on call 24/7 and can come pick up a pet as soon as we are notified by Hospice. This will keep the pet from having to enter the shelter system. Usually when an elderly person is rushed to the hospital and there is no one left in the home to care for pets, animal control is called and the pets are seized. Because of the situation, pets don’t even have to be held for the stray time! While the patient is hospitalized, Hospet foster homes will provide respite care for the pet. If the pet owner is requesting that we place the pet in a new home, we will screen potential adopters while the pet remains with the patient. The goal is to keep the patient and their pet together as long as possible.

 Very cool, and totally awesome!

Not much going on here

Week’s been a bit hectic but generally uneventfull.

Work was spent rushing to get shipped the orders of people who don’t understand the concept of “plan ahead” including the guy who wanted something shipped (yesterday) overnight on his UPS account to him for today.  One BIG problem with that is that  UPS doesn’t deliver on Saturdays, and since Monday is the replacement day for the holiday it wouldn’t arrive till Tuesday.  Offered USPS Express with the extra fee for guaranteed holiday delivery but he settled for UPS 2nd day instead.  Course then I had to go figure out the UPS website and how to ship UPS under someone else’s account, I swear they’ve changed how the website handles that since the last time I did it.  I mean, I know I don’t ship UPS alot?  As in, once every 6 months or so?  But, it couldn’t even find the company’s email address.  Ended up calling into the 800# to get walked through it.

Not much going on at home either.  We’ve been prepping for a hoped for “surprise” that should be arriving Dec 31st.  More on that when it arrives as I refuse to jinx myself, its already been put off twice due to situations out of my control.  Husband and I both got Amazon gift cards from family, and since they arrived early with no wrapping they got spent early.  I bought a bunch of odds and ends, preordered some books, a remote trigger for the camera, and what not.  Husband bought a new headset/mic combo for his computer (though it’ll hook up to the Xbox too) so when  he’s playing online games with his friends he can chat with them.  He then promptly sat down at the computer and has hardly budged since.  I threatened to hide the headset.

Animals are doing ok.  Apollo’s thrilled at the snow that fell last night, when we take him out all he wants to do is paw at it and dig in it, and snuff the snow.  Nutcase, its only an inch or so, but he thinks its awesome.  On a side note, he’s so well insulated that when snow falls and lands on his coat it doesn’t melt till he comes inside.  Trouble has been  her usual self, when we got the box of Amazon orders she climbed into the empty box and proceeded to *swat*claw*swat* at everything that came within view through the gap between the box flaps.  Apollo couldn’t figure out what she was doing and got swatted several times before deciding that whatever it was that she was doing didn’t REALLY matter.  Janie’s doing ok, still stable.  The Vet is supposed to be calling me to set up some dietary changes for her in an attempt to help her kidneys’ function a bit better.  In the mean time I’m supposed to try to feed her a low fat diet, not easy when the cat in question is the pickiest eater ever.  Thankfully she’ll eat boiled chicken and rabbit.  I’d be happier if I could get her to eat a raw diet, but she refuses to touch it, no matter what or how.

Dog food

Now I know I’ve mentioned before that I’ve been making my own dog treats.  The reasons for this are a couple, first he’s on a gluten free diet and that all by itself cuts out over half the treats on the petstore shelf.  The other reason is concern over where the products IN the treats came from.

Did you know that a company can import partially processed meats and other ingredients, complete the processing here in the USA, and legally put “Made in the USA” on the package?  And unless the package specifically says SOURCED in the USA that is likely whats happening.  Now not all imported ingredients are bad, the only country you REALLY have to watch out for is China, pretty much anywhere else in the world is fine as a food source.  But the problems with products from China never really went away, they just got relegated to “old news” and thus are rarely talked about any more.

Needless to say these concerns didn’t take long to make it over to what he was eating regularly.  Now he was already eating a gluten free kibble specifically recommended by his breeder.  So first off to do some research on them…..and no information on the package or website telling me where their ingredients comes from.  Not cool.  Now true, I can’t find any record of them being involved in any recalls either, BUT their parent company has a reputation for not always handling recalls well with some of their OTHER petfood brands.  Not cool.

So a bit more research and digging around.  I’d prefer to feed a raw diet but worry about making sure he’s getting the right balance of “stuff,” especially since he’s still a growing boy, not to mention the need for someone else in the family to feed him on the occasion we’re on vacation.  Ran across a company called The Honest Kitchen, they make a dehydrated raw dog and cat food.  Hey, they list where their ingredients are from!  Even better, they’re FDA certified for producing food for HUMAN consumption.  Thats right, unlike every other dog food company out there when they say their food is human grade they can prove it.  Thats really cool.  And cost wise, volume for volume its actually a bit cheaper than the equivalent amounts of Taste of the Wild canned foods and kibble.  Thats really cool.

Been feeding The Honest Kitchen’s Embark and Zeal foods for several weeks now and he quite enjoys it.  I’d been supplementing them with raw ground turkey or chicken for variety, when I ran across this post by Heather over at Raised by Wolves.  Now Apollo certainly doesn’t need the extra fat and whatnot that those babies do, but I like the concept of the “meatball” format, make ’em up, freeze ’em, pull out as much as you need for a meal.  Takes a bit more time cause they have to thaw, but not as much as if I was making it from scratch each time.  So I modified the basic recipe to fit my needs:

2lbs ground turkey or chicken
2lbs 90/10 ground beef
2 cups whole oats
a small splash of olive oil
a small dash of molasses
4 eggs
plus whatever else I feel like throwing in (sprinkle of ground dried garlic, a 1/2 cup of grated peperoni, left over cooked turkey, etc)

Mix it all up, use an ice cream scoop to make into meatballs and place onto a parchment or freezer paper lined cookie tray, place tray in freezer till meatballs are frozen (several hours, I just usually leave them over night), move meatballs into ziplock bags, and presto easy, predone supplements for a growing puppy.  And since I was usually making his food several hours ahead of time anyway due to the need to rehydrate it, adding in a meatball or two to thaw isn’t a huge deal.

I have to add, cause someone’s sure to wonder, I’ve tried REPEATEDLY to get my cats onto a raw diet, I highly suspect that it would help Janie’s health problems immensely, but they steadfastly REFUSE.  I keep trying!

Kitty Holster update

In watching the stats for people who wander across this site, I noticed that there’s actually quite a few (as in a couple week) who find me via the search term “Kitty Holster” so I thought I’d give an update as to what I think.

Previous post.

Not only are we still using it on Trouble, I went ahead and bought one for Janie as well, though I’ve not remembered to get pictures of her in it.  They’ve held up well, and being able to toss them in the washer and dryer when they get a bit gross is very handy.  Janie is as unfussed about hers as Trouble was/is about wearing hers so I got to say that I’m quite delighted with these purchases all the way around.

Disclaimer, both Kitty holsters were bought with my own money, I was not asked to do these reviews and have received nothing for them.

More Puppy Videos

I promised a while back to try to get video of the puppy interacting with the cats.  This wasn’t quite what I wanted (Janie can STILL drive him across the house….) but I was able to grab the camera in time to catch this so I’ll take it.  In this case Trouble started it by grabbing (with claws) at the paws that passed by her, but she doesn’t appear to be actually upset by the results.

(please ignore the grubby carpet, I’m behind on vacuuming)

The cat wants out

This is what I listen to everytime I take the puppy out.  Yes I could put her in her Kitty Holster and take her out too….except she’s still confused on this whole leash concept, and the puppy wants to RUN and PLAY, and that doesn’t work with her in tow.  So she has to wait her turn.

Of course its not just Memphis.

And of course its not just Memphis thats the problem, the Central CA SPCA recently decided that it didn’t have to make its meetings public afterall, and the NYC Dept of Health (which runs the city pounds) scheduled its board meeting in a room designed to hold less than 50 people (which is actually against the law in NYC, there has to be room to hold enough people who can be expected to attend, and the law states that if something has been high profile there must be plans for alot of extra people!).

Seriously people, the whole point of your jobs is to HELP animals, not kill them, trying to deny the no-kill advocates space only makes it worse!

Help a small business

I first ran across Crazy K Farm after Hsoi talked about taking some rescue ducks there.  As well as taking in rescue animals of all sorts they sell a very wide selection of products for your small/farm animal needs.  I just got my younger cat (Trouble) a kitty holster cat harness from them, it arrived today and I have to say that first impression is awesome.  And to top it off she doesn’t even seem to be fussed about wearing it!

So, how can you help them?  Well, the obvious is to buy something of theirs, but there’s something else you can do that right now would help them more.  Tobi (the owner) is attempting to get a wider circle of buyers for her products, specifically the Kitty Holster.  She has signed up to possibly win a $10,000 grant but to do it she needs to raise a certain dollar amount first, and she’s coming up short.  You’ll need either a Paypal account, or a credit card, and you can donate as little as $5 (or as much as you want).  Click on the button that says “Back this project” and you’ll be taken to a page where you can specify the dollar amount you wish to donate.  You can either choose a preset $ amount, with a thank you reward, or scroll to the bottom and enter the amount you choose for no reward other than her heartfelt thanks.

Company Endorsement

In February of 2010 I bought a Litter Robot litter box for my cats.  Unfortunately only one of the cats (Trouble) will use it on a regular basis, the other one (Janie) turned out to have issues with the whole “covered litter box” concept (basically she hates it).  In general for the last year however its worked just fine with minimal hitches in the running.

But a week or so ago it stopped working.  No lights on the control panel, no nothing.  Sigh.  It only came with a 90 day warranty, and even if the warranty were for a year its over that mark too.  But I went ahead and contacted the company.  At best I figured I’d end up being told I had to buy a $50 part to fix it, at worst that I’d have to pay for shipping it to them and a fee to have them even look at it.  But I figured it was worth contacting them to see what they had to say about it.

Instead Shirley from their tech support department contacted me with a list of things to check, or double check, with the end conclusion that it was likely the power supply was no longer working (the power supply remains cold even after having been plugged in for a while, when every other power supply in the house gets at least a little warm after the same period of time), not perhaps a HUGE surprise as we had major thunderstorms rolling through the day it died complete with power fluctuations. She said that was a not unusual failure point, the other being that something caused the plug jack in the unit to fail, and that were that the case they have a new jack unit they can send me.

The company shipped me a new power supply at no charge, with only request being that I return the defunct one to them, AND I don’t even have to pay the shipping on the returned power supply.  They’re sending FedEx back out to pick up the box.  The new power supply did indeed solve the problem, and the defunct one is in the box waiting for FedEx to come by and pick it up (the plan is for Tuesday pickup).  How cool is that?

**Disclaimer, I bought the original litter box with my own money, and am receiving no kickback or reward for this endorsement.  I also have to add that this is NOT a litter box for every cat loving house-old out there, but it works well for me!
