Not prehaps a huge surprise, but still. I had been wondering how people with implanted metal devices were fairing under their tender ministrations, and now I know. I guess that after whatever point I finally break down and allow them to put the pins in my knees that they keep saying they need to I won’t be flying again!
Politics
Budweiser
Ok, I swore I wasn’t going to watch TV today, but the husband DOES football (as in, as soon as we’d bought the house he was calling Direct TV to get the NFL ticket package NOW), so the TV was on whether I was watching or not. Thankfully other than an extra remembrance at the beginning of each game the overt references weren’t there.
Till just a few minutes ago.
Some of you may remember, the Superbowl after 9/11/01 Budweiser put out a 1minute spot. Now I don’t drink, and most beer commercials suck, but I’ve a soft spot for the Budweiser Clydesdales so the commercial caught my eye. They only played it that one time.
They redid it for this 10yr anniversary. The two are essentially identical, minor changes. And it still put tears in my eyes.
Took some searching, but I found a link to the new version:
9/11
I have to agree with Tam that its totally being overdone this year (not to mention this). You can’t turn on the TV, to pretty much any channel, without SOMETHING doing 9/11 stuff. I agree with need to remember, remember that the US isn’t invulnerable, and that we need to be ready to fight back. Because of that reason I am going to share where I was that morning, to help ME remember. But I’ll be avoiding the TV, and radio like a plague today.
Where I was, the morning of 9/11/01
I’d graduated from college that spring. Was working at my new job, we’d been out of training all of a couple weeks. I was working for John Hancock Signature Services. JHSS was a subsidiary of John Hancock Mutual Funds. All owned by the same folks, just the part of the company that handled customer service (that may have changed, I know they were doing some reorganizing about the same time I left). Basically I took phone calls from people who wanted assistance with their mutual funds. Opening accounts, adding money, withdrawing money, panicking over the stock market, that sorta thing. I got into work that morning a bit early, which I usually did since I rode public transport into Boston (like any other sane person would do).
So by 8am I was logged into my computer and ready to take calls. It was a slow morning, I’d only taken a few calls when just before 9am one of the guys who worked the 9am shift came running out of the elevator and yelled “A plane just hit one of the Twin Towers!!”
Not everyone heard him, but I wasn’t on a call at the time so I did. Logged into CNN to see if there were any details, and there wasn’t much. Not even what type of plane it was. I figured it was some idiot with a beginners license who’d been showing off, and went back to reading my book while waiting for calls. One of the supervisors also heard him though, and turned on his radio at his desk. He had it quiet, but I was only a couple desks away, so I heard the announcer say “oh my god, a second plane has just hit the other tower…..” I headed back for CNN, but had trouble getting the page to load, once it did, the image of the passenger jet just before it hit the tower was front and center.
The news spread like hot gossip around the building, the incoming calls simply stopped as the public realized what had happened and sat glued to their TVs and radios. The supervisor with the radio turned it up. When we heard about the plane hitting the Pentagon it was followed by the news that they were evacuating the Hancock Tower in Boston. Everyone out, its considered a potential target. Terrorists. We weren’t in the Tower, we were located in a smaller building toward the outskirts of the city. They weren’t, yet, going to evacuate us.
By this time the only incoming calls were from family of people who worked there, checking to make sure we were all ok. I don’t remember when exactly we heard about flight 93, the Internet was overloaded with people trying to find out what happened, so likely it was somebodies radio that gave us the news. We sat around doing basically nothing except staring out the window at the fuel carrier in the river right next door to us, and scanning the sky for planes headed our way. The guy who worked one cubical over from me was supposed to have been into work at 11am, it was 11:45 before he showed up, he said traffic was horrendous as everyone tried to get home. We informed him that he shouldn’t have bothered to come in, they’d just announced they were sending us home at noon. There was no point to keeping us there, the stock market hadn’t opened that morning, and no one was calling anyway. Plus there was our safety to keep in mind.
My mother called me and told me not to bother with public transport, it was beyond overloaded, she’d meet me at the parking lot halfway between work and the T and drive me to my car. As we were walking out the door, we were informed that at this time we were expected to show up for work the next day, and to expect to be asked to work overtime, they expected a massive influx of calls from people panicking over their money. If that changed due to a security problem they’d let us know.
I did NOT spend the rest of the day glued to the TV, though my parents did. I caught the image of the towers collapsing though. At that point I headed for my computer and started sending out emails to everyone I knew who was in the NY/DC area, and for the few who I didn’t know emails, to mutual friends asking for information. Spent the rest of the day in shock I think.
Work the next few days was dead. No overtime, cause hardly anyone called us. The few who did were angry though because they were supposed to have received money from their account and didn’t. Because the stock market wasn’t opening we couldn’t remove the funds from the accounts on schedule (its a rules/legal thing, I remember enough to explain if you really need me to, but not going to bother right now), and people were pissed. It was close to a week before call volume picked up. THEN we got overtime.
No one I knew personally was on the planes, or killed in the towers or Pentagon. John Hancock as a company lost a VP who’d been on a plane though. And my coworkers who worked directly with the brokers rather than the general public, were very familiar with many of the people who never made it out of the towers. Thankfully none were actually on the phone with them at the time.
I don’t have any awesome words, or speeches, but it did teach me that the USA, as a country is not invulnerable, that we can be hit, and targeted, and that we need to be ready to fight back whenever necessary.
TSA Confiscates Insulin
A diabetic pregnant woman’s insulin was confiscated by the TSA. Apparently the TSA officer decided it was a threat. The TSA’s response was to quote their liquid carry on items policy. Very helpfull.
Now I had to go look it up online, but from what can I find the standard sizes are either 3ml or 10ml vials, WAY less than the 3.4ounces (100ml) that is the max allowed on a flight. Even if she had 10 vials with her (which I doubt personally, but you never know) that’s ONLY 100ml which is the max SINGLE size the TSA allows on the plane, and you’re allowed SEVERAL containers of that size. She also states that the vials were properly labeled AND she had a letter from her doctor. Plus they didn’t take her syringes either. Go figure.
Way to go TSA, I wonder if they realize that they not only put that woman’s life at risk, they risked the life and health of her fetus as well should something have prevented her from getting more insulin on her trip.
Readiness Drill Goes Wrong
And that’s the actual title to the article. Personally every time one of these makes the news I think the title ought to be more along the lines “Some Idiot in Corporate Decides to Scare the Crap out of Most of Their Employees and See if They Can Kill Another.” This is the FIRST such article I’ve seen where the authorities make the point that if one of the victim employee’s had been lawfully armed the “robber” could of ended up dead (and in CA too!). Seriously though, who thinks this is a good idea?
Not that I’m against readiness drills, its probably the only way to make sure your employees actually know how to react in a real situation, but every time one of these such drills makes the news none of the “people in charge” have put any REAL thought into how the “victim” employees are going react and feel about it. “oh, they’ll run and hide” (uhuh, better hope you don’t have a former military person working there, they might head for cover, but they’re just as likely to come back out of cover firing too) “we’ll tell them afterwards it was just a drill, they’ll understand” (uhuh, and when you have workers comp claims for “mental suffering”?)
Has anyone heard of one of these such “drills” going WELL? Personally I’m just waiting till someone decides this is a good idea and a prepared employee shoots the “robber.” Bets on how many years said employee will get?
Michele Bachmann
Ok, I’ve not bothered to follow the whole media hoopla, I am aware that supposedly her doctor weighed in on her headaches. I don’t really care if the media exaggerated the severity thereof or not. I get stress headaches. It takes one hell of a stressful situation, and even then they don’t qualify as “migraines” unless I end up with a visual migraine, but let me tell you something, a headache brought on by stress, no matter how minor a headache, DOES impede your ability to function. It might be only a minor impediment if its a minor headache, but it DOES get in the way.
Honey if you are already aware that you get stress headaches then the White House isn’t a job you need. Every single president I can think of has walked out of the White House, at the end of his term, looking 10years older than he did when he walked in. And that’s at the end of the FIRST term, those that served two terms generally looked closer to 20years older. That is a job that is stress personified. You’re going to have a constant headache, the real kind not just the figurative kind, and it’ll only get worse not better. Don’t do that to yourself or your country.
Update on Kapone
Previous post here.
According to the Where’s Kapone Facebook page the reward has gone all the way up to $11,000 thanks to donations from a variety of sources.
The Animal Control Officer who picked up Kapone and Jersey has been arrested on charges of Animal Cruelty and falsifying records. Infact its currently standing at 2 counts of Animal Cruelty. After the warrent had been issued the ACO was out picking up another dog that had been supposedly hit by a car, someone at MAS warned her the police were waiting for her, so instead of bringing the dog right back she drove around for a couple hours, till the police were gone. By the time she got back to the shelter the dog in her truck was dead, and the attending Vet says the cause of death was heat stroke, not the injuries from being by a car. The charges of falsifying records appears to stem from the very incident where Kapone went missing. According to her testemony and the shelter records she went out to pick up two dogs reported loose. She reported verbally picking up two dogs, but instead of returning directly to the shelter she went home for an extended period of time. She then returned to the shelter, and filled out paperwork for a dog matching Kapone’s description, but there is no record (including video) of her bring a dog into the shelter at that time dispite this paperwork. She then went back out and drove around some more before returning to the shelter and doing paperwork for Jersey and bringing her into the shelter. Please note that Memphis does NOT have GPS tracking on its ACO’s vehicles, infact a company offered to donate them a while back and MAS refused stating they didn’t need them, so there is no way to confirm exactly where this ACO and her vehicle were when they were not at the shelter.
Seriously Indy, its time to fire your judges
Ran across this today. For those of you who don’t want to read:
Lady has a couple beers at a friend’s house. After drinking them she is approached by another acquaintance who needs a ride somewhere. She does the right thing and tells them she’s to drunk to drive, but if they have a drivers license they may drive her car as long as she can come. Halfway to the destination a cop pulls them over because the light on the plate is out. Turns out the acquaintance doesn’t have a license after all. Lady is charged with public intoxication even though she’s done nothing wrong. Supreme court upholds the conviction! The cop stated she acted drunk….um yah, thats why she’s not driving! Now if they were charging her with something related to allowing someone without a license to drive I’d be ok with it.
Seriously guys, its time to fire those judges!
I just got shamed into this.
I try to avoid politics on here other than the occasional link and eye roll. I was raised that politics and all other attached thoughts and functions are best kept private. If you wish to discuss them with someone its a private conversation, best kept between you and the other person. Over the years I’ve added to that my opinion of most major sports, folks just get to worked up over it, and its just not worth it. Other than the reposting of information about the Memphis Animal Shelter, and gripes about the TSA, I’ve done pretty well at that.
So when I saw the following pieces of news I cringed inside. Made a note about which companies I was now going to be avoiding as much as I possibly could. And attempted to go on my way.
Till this morning, when I read a new post by Heather over at Raised by Wolves. And I sat here with tears running down my face.
So here goes my attempt at it.
Subway has decided that Michael Vick is their Sportsman of the Year. Nike has signed him on as a spokesperson. When I mentioned both to my husband (who watches pro football avidly) he, rather frustratedly, exclaimed “but he didn’t even have that good of a year!!” But it doesn’t matter, the companies in question know that the media follows Vick around, because he’s guarenteed a crowd everywhere he goes, a loud and obnoxious crowd, but a crowd, which means they’ll get all kinds of free publicity.
I know alot of folks say “he served his time, let him be” or “he apologized, what more do you want” and “but everyone deserves a 2nd chance!” but really? He never served a day for animal cruelty. The authorities decided to work out a plea deal, they dropped all the charges pertaining to animal cruelty, and he served time for rackateering. They had enough evidence they most likely wouldn’t have had any trouble convincing a jury, and he’s certinally admited since that he was involved. He’s apologized to his fans for “being involved” but there’s been no apology to the dogs who’s lives he took, or the others who survived but are scarred for life. I’ve not seen (and neither have others who’ve watched more closely than I) one comment or step that actually seems to show remorse for what he did. He’s sorry he got caught, but well, you know, that was how he was raised. That makes it all better, right?
When I found out that Vick had been whining because now his kids wouldn’t get to grow up with a dog all I could think of was “good, now he won’t get to show them how fighting is done, at least at home,” and the comment that a dog might help with his rehabilitation?? Yah, I saw red. And then one of my co-workers made a happy comment about how the president had called up the Eagles and during the conversation congratulated them for giving Vick a 2nd chance. They don’t mention his name around me any more.
Back in the aftermath of the president’s call to the Eagles Fugly Horse put up this post. Go read, and make sure to read the comments, about 1/4 of the way down the page a commenter makes a suggestion involving a rain barrell, and a geeked up meth-head. I rather liked the idea.
Way to go TSA
Nigerian slips by TSA twice with boarding passes that are out of date and don’t even contain his name. Oh, and the only ID he has is a school ID that may not even be his. Its not even the TSA that catches him, its the person handling the boarding who checks each pass as you enter the gangway.
